YEARS 7, 8 and 9 - Lower Secondary

Students begin their studies of the Lower Secondary Curriculum in Year 7 and continue through Years 8 and 9. Cambridge Lower Secondary is typically for learners aged 11 to 14 years old. The curriculum helps to prepare students for the next step of their education, providing a sound programme as they progress through the Cambridge Pathway in an age-appropriate way.

Progression Tests are taken at the end of the academic year in Year 7 and again in Year 8 for English as a first or second language, Mathematics and Science. These progression tests are administered and graded by the student’s teacher. They are great for tracking and reviewing a student's progress over time and enable teachers to give structured feedback to our students and provide evidence of progress to parents and staff. The results provide detailed information about the performance of each of our students and the understanding of the class overall. They enable us to compare the strengths and weaknesses of individuals and groups and identify where to focus further teaching.

Students study all of the following subjects in Years 7,8 and 9.

   *  English
   *  Mathematics
   *  Combined Science
   *  Global Perspectives
   *  Geography
   *  History
   *  Global Perspectives
   *  Art & Design
   *  Design & Technology

   *  Physical Educatio (non - exam)
   *. Music (non - exam)

Students sit their Lower Secondary Checkpoint Tests at the end of Year 9 for English, Mathematics, Science and Global Perspectives. These Checkpoint tests are administered under formal exam conditions and marked by Cambridge International examiners.

YEARS 10 and 11 - Upper Secondary

The Cambridge IGCSE curriculum offers a variety of routes for students with a wide range of abilities, including those whose first language is not English. Cambridge IGCSE offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum, supported with excellent resources and training. Cambridge IGCSE helps improve performance by developing skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving. It is the perfect springboard to advanced study.

ACE ASCEND

There are 70+ IGCSE subjects and 55+ AS/A level subjects. For students who wish to study a subject not offered at our school, we have an online school tutoring service called ACE ASCEND. Through ACE ASCEND, we provide tutors to deliver online lessons. These online lessons can be built into our students' timetable and are delivered in school. These lesson come at an additional cost to our regular tuition fees.

Year 10

In year 10 students typically begin studying IGCSE courses in each subject. IGCSEs are designed as a two year course.

Year 11

Regardless of the number of subjects in which students choose to take exams, at ACE of BRUSSELS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL all students continue to have all subjects on their timetables until the end of year 11.

Students complete their
IGCSE courses during this year, sitting their IGCSE exams in May and June.

Towards the end of this academic year, students need to decide which AS/A level subjects they want to study in years 12 & 13. It is generally advised that students study three subjects at AS/A level. It is recommended that students achieve a C grade and above in their IGCSE in order to progress to studying a given subject at AS/A level.

YEAR 12 and 13 - AS & A Levels

Year 12

Students begin their AS/A level courses. These are designed as a two year course. Students take the first half of their exams in a given subject at the end of this year (AS components). Students typically choose between three AS/A level subjects to study at AS/A level.

Year 13

Students take the second half of their exams in a given subject at the end of this year. (A2 components). The results from a student’s AS components taken in year 12 and A2 components taken in year 13 are combined to award an overall A level.

General Information

Devices

At ACE of BRUSSELS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL our students bring their own devices with them every day. Each student is provided with their own school online account and email address and they use this to access resources across our educational platforms. We use Veracross as our management information system and students this is where students keep track of their homework and classwork assignments, as can their parents.

Form Tutors

Students attend registration between 08:40 - 09:00 each morning with their form tutor. During this time, form tutors check-in with students and take attendance for the day. Additionally, form tutors use this time to inform students about events taking place across the school as well as delivering short presentations relating to important social and emotional topics. The form tutor is the first point of contact for parents for day to day queries.
